Floating Water-Cooled Data Center Project

Location: Stockton, California, USA
Completion Date: April 2021

A groundbreaking 10,000 sq. ft. floating data center was developed along the San Joaquin River in California to support high-performance computing (HPC) workloads using a sustainable water-based cooling system.

The floating barge structure relies on recirculated river water—without chemicals or refrigerants—to deliver highly efficient and eco-conscious cooling. The design presented new engineering challenges, particularly the need to monitor for leaks from freshwater sources in a marine and dusty environment. With long-term reliability and hands-off operation essential, a robust leak detection system was needed to safeguard the infrastructure.

    • Detect freshwater leaks in a floating barge environment

    • Flexible system capable of monitoring multiple zones and potential leak points

    • Rugged sensing cable with minimal maintenance needs

    • Accurate leak location alerts without generating false alarms

    • Compatibility with the facility’s building management system (BMS)

  • PermAlert deployed its PAL-AT leak detection system along with AGW-Gold sensing cable to meet the facility’s unique needs. The PAL-AT panel offers real-time, multi-zone monitoring and is highly scalable. The AGW-Gold cable, designed for harsh environments, ensures accurate detection while withstanding dust and vibration without triggering false alarms. The system was fully integrated with the site’s BMS to support automated alerts and long-term reliability.
